ポンペオ氏　解散命令請求「誤り」

世界における宗教の自由の促進を目指す「国際宗教自由（ＩＲＦ）サミット・アジア」が22日、都内で開かれた。マイク・ポンペオ前米国務長官ら登壇者は、中国当局によるチベット族やウイグル族に対する人権弾圧などを批判し、信教の自由を巡りアジア地域で日本が果たすべき役割の重要性を強調した。

ポンペオ氏は「中国、北朝鮮などの独裁政権は人々による信仰を否定している」と批判し、同氏が現職の時に米国が新疆ウイグル自治区におけるウイグル族弾圧をジェノサイド（民族大量虐殺）と認定して以降、現状は「より悪くなっている」と見解を示した。また「米国にとって重要なパートナーである日本で信教の自由が守られることが重要だ」とする一方、日本政府が世界平和統一家庭連合（旧統一教会）に解散命令請求をしていることについては「いかなる教会も解散させるのは誤りであり、日本という国にとって有害だ。改めるよう祈っている」と述べた。

サミットの共同議長でトランプ前米政権で国際宗教自由大使を務めたサム・ブラウンバック氏は冒頭、「この会議（ＩＲＦ）は宗教に関するものにとどまらず、共通の人権に関するものだ」とし、「東アジアは重要な課題を抱えている。日本や韓国といった民主主義国家が積極的に関与すべきだ」と求めた。

また台湾の頼清徳総統がビデオメッセージを寄せ、中国を念頭に「宗教の自由は戦い守るもの。台湾は世界的信教の自由のために立ち向かう決意だ」と語った。

パネルディスカッションに登壇した神道国際学会の三宅善信理事長は、日本の抱える問題として「成熟した民主主義国でありながら政府が特定の宗教の法人格を剥奪し、布教活動を禁じようとしている」と指摘。「政府が宗教団体に法人格を与えないのは共産主義と同じだ」と警鐘を鳴らした。

来賓を代表して浜田聡参議院議員（ＮＨＫから国民を守る党）があいさつ。２年前の安倍晋三元首相の銃撃事件以後、「日本全国で家庭連合へのバッシングが起こっている」と報告。「他にも問題を起こしている団体はあるのに、家庭連合だけが弾圧されるのは不公平だ」と主張した。

サミットではチベット、ウイグルの代表者らも登壇し、中国当局による宗教迫害や人権侵害を「ジェノサイド」だと非難した。アジアでの開催が２回目となるＩＲＦサミットは、宗教的迫害に苦しむ地域がアジアに多いことを懸念して行われた。

Pompeo's request for dissolution order "mistake"

The International Religious Freedom (IRF) Summit Asia, which aims to promote religious freedom around the world, was held in Tokyo on the 22nd. Speakers including former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo criticized the Chinese authorities' human rights oppression of Tibetans and Uighurs, and emphasized the importance of the role Japan should play in the Asian region regarding religious freedom.

Pompeo criticized "dictatorial regimes such as China and North Korea that deny people's religious beliefs," and stated his view that the current situation has "gotten worse" since the United States designated the oppression of the Uighurs in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region as genocide while he was in office. He also stated that "it is important that religious freedom is protected in Japan, an important partner of the United States," but with regard to the Japanese government's request for an order to disband the World Peace Unification Family (formerly the Unification Church), he said, "Disbanding any church is wrong and harmful to the country of Japan. I pray that they will change their stance."

Sam Brownback, co-chair of the summit and former U.S. Ambassador for International Religious Freedom in the Trump administration, began his remarks by saying, "This conference (IRF) is not just about religion, it is about common human rights." He called for "East Asia facing important challenges. Democracies such as Japan and South Korea should be actively engaged."

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te also sent a video message, with China in mind, saying, "Religious freedom is something we must fight for and protect. Taiwan is determined to stand up for global religious freedom."

Yoshinobu Miyake, president of the International Shinto Studies Association, who appeared at the panel discussion, pointed out that Japan faces a problem in which "even though we are a mature democratic country, the government is trying to strip certain religions of their legal status and ban missionary activities. For the government to not grant legal status to religious organizations is the same as communism," he warned.

Representing the guests, Senator Satoshi Hamada (Party to Protect the People from NHK) gave a speech. He reported that since the shooting incident involving former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe two years ago, "bashing of the Family Federation has been occurring all over Japan." He argued that "it is unfair that only the Family Federation is being oppressed, when there are other groups that are causing problems."

Representatives of Tibet and Uighur also took to the stage at the summit, condemning the religious persecution and human rights violations by the Chinese authorities as "genocide." The IRF summit, which was held for the second time in Asia, was held out of concern that many areas in Asia suffer from religious persecution.
