世界平和統一家庭連合（家庭連合、旧統一教会）の２世信者が立ち上げた「信者の人権を守る二世の会」は１８日、シンポジウム「なぜそれでも統一教会を信じるのか」を東京都内で開いた。ゲストとして、教団信者で韓国・大邱カトリック大学で教鞭を執る鳥海豊氏と、ノンフィクション作家の窪田順生氏が出席し、基調講演やパネルディスカッションを行った。同会主催のシンポジウムは今回で６回目。

鳥海氏は教団について、「すべての宗教を包括し、すべての人類を救う決意と約束のもとに始まった宗教団体」と説明。その一方で、「目標などの時間的制約によって急ぎ過ぎていろいろな被害をもたらしたのは、本当に申し訳なく残念に思う」と話した。

また、強制棄教を目的とした拉致監禁の被害に遭った経験を持つ鳥海氏は、監禁した人々が「『君のために集まっている』と言いながら、こちらが本音で話すと全否定してくる。そうすると、心の中の大切なものがどんどん破壊されていく恐怖を感じた」と自身の体験について語った。

「家庭連合を取り巻く状況は、社会の暴走の前触れではないか」と懸念する窪田氏は、メディアの体質として「クレームの来ない安全な報道が好まれる」と指摘。クレームに弱いメディアを変えることは難しいとした上で、「世間の部外者や自分の周囲に理解者を増やしていく」必要性を訴えた。

また、宗教に否定的な日本人の視点で教団信者の言動を見た際、「その熱量を見て恐怖心が先立ち、つぶそうという動きにつながるのではないか。信者がいいことを言えば言うほど悪循環になっているなら、この回転を良い方に戻す作業が必要だ」との見方を示した。

Guests included Toriumi Yutaka, a member of the church who teaches at the Catholic University of Daegu in South Korea, and non-fiction writer Kubota Junsei, who gave keynote speeches and panel discussions. This was the sixth symposium hosted by the association.

Toriumi explained that the sect was "a religious organization that was established with the determination and promise to embrace all religions and save all humanity," but added, "I am truly sorry and regretful that we rushed too much due to time constraints and other factors, causing various damages."

Toriumi, who was abducted and imprisoned with the aim of forcing him to renounce his faith, spoke of his own experience, saying, "The people who held me captive would say, 'We've gathered here for you,' but when I spoke honestly they would completely deny it. I felt the fear of seeing the important things in my heart being destroyed."

Mr. Kubota expressed concern that "the situation surrounding the Family Federation may be a harbinger of social unrest," and pointed out that the media's nature is to "prefer safe reporting that does not attract complaints." After stating that it is difficult to change the media, which is vulnerable to complaints, he stressed the need to "increase the number of outsiders in society and those around us who understand."

Furthermore, when looking at the words and actions of the cult's followers from the perspective of Japanese people who have a negative view of religion, he expressed the view that "seeing their passion may make people feel fear, which may lead to attempts to crush them. If the more positive things the followers say, the more vicious a cycle it becomes, then work needs to be done to turn this cycle back in a positive direction."
