安倍晋三元首相暗殺事件を契機に世界平和統一家庭連合（家庭連合＝旧統一教会）に対して政府が東京地方裁判所に解散命令を請求し、信徒らは礼拝など信仰活動に不可欠な教会施設や教団職員である聖職者を失う瀬戸際に立たされている。７月22日、信教の自由と民主主義を擁護する国際宗教自由連合（ＩＣＲＦ）日本委員会（委員長＝伊東正一九州大学名誉教授）総会で、主に中国の宗教迫害を監視してきたイタリアのオンライン宗教専門誌『ビター・ウィンター』ディレクターのマルコ・レスピンティ氏が講演し、日本の状況に警鐘を鳴らした。

宗教の自由と人権を扱う雑誌『ビター・ウィンター』は独創的な事業として成功しており、メディア関係者、活動家、学者を結集し、いつでも、どこでも、そして誰のためにでも、信教の自由を守ること、そして信者の迫害を糾弾することに深くコミットしています。

宗教的な迫害や宗教に対する不寛容が、世界中で信者らを脅かしています。その形はさまざまですが、目標は一つで、信教の自由を抑制し、否定さえすることです。

しかし、信教の自由は、人間や社会にとって、それがなくても成り立つという偶然の産物ではありません。あらゆる存続可能な共同体の柱であり、真の民主主義を確立し、市民のあらゆる権利と保護を確保するものです。

信教の自由は実際、最初の政治的人権です。神を信じる、あるいは信じない権利であり、宇宙を包み込み、支配する超自然的な存在や力を信じた、あるいは信じなかった結果、それに従って生きる権利です。家庭内で信仰するにとどまらず、信者は公に礼拝し、それに応じて個人的生活や共同生活を営む自由を持つべきです。

いかなる権力、国家、教会、組織も、その権利を抑制したり否定したりできません。

また宗教の自由とは、相対主義や選（え）り好みではありません。すべての人間の基本的な権利であり、究極の真理が存在すると信じ、それに従って生きる権利です。

日本の場合を考えてみましょう。私はヨーロッパから来ましたが、日本の生き生きとした文化と活気に満ちた民主主義を称賛します。首都東京は、古代と現代が見事に融合した都市であり、何百万人もの遵法（じゅんぽう）精神にあふれた市民が住み、世界で最も勤勉な人々が集まる中心地の一つです。

しかし、日本は大きな（権力の）濫用（らんよう）が行われている場所でもあります。私が言うのは、世界平和統一家庭連合のことであり、日本政府が東京地方裁判所に求めているその解散命令請求のことです。

『ビター・ウィンター』はこの事件をつぶさに追い掛け、不条理である、とかなり強く非難してきました。

すべては安倍晋三元首相が２０２２年７月８日に暗殺されたことから始まりました。

事実、家庭連合はその責任を負わされ、宗教団体としての解散請求にまで至りました。

被告人の山上徹也は、殺人の動機について、家庭連合に協力した安倍元首相への憎しみから、懲らしめるつもりで、と語っています。また２００２年に母親が破産し、その原因が家庭連合に過剰な寄付をしたからだと言っています。

しかしこの事件には多くの影が残っています。例えば、なぜ母親の破産後、20年も待ってから行動に移したのか、などです。

しかし結局のところ、目の前には、犯していない罪で処罰される組織があるのです。

安倍元首相は高い代償を払い、家庭連合も高い代償を払い続けていますが、悪役はあくまでも暗殺者です。彼以外の誰も、その凶悪な犯罪の責任を負わされるべきではありません。

しかしながら、家庭連合に敵対する弁護士やその他の人々により、古いキャンペーンが再び姿を現して出てきました。それは主に政治的な理由からですが、反共産主義を何十年も主導し、成功を収めてきた家庭連合に憤慨してきたからです。今はエホバの証人のような、安倍元首相暗殺とは関係の薄い団体も標的にされています。

良識ある民主的な人々であれば、中華人民共和国やロシア連邦で行われていることを彷彿（ほうふつ）させるような措置に不安を抱くはずです。もちろん、日本の当局はそのような、ならず者国家と関わりたくないはずです。従って、家庭連合やその他の宗教的少数派に対する不正行為を正すべきです。この偉大な国は、このような不正に値しません。

いかなる権力、国家、教会、組織も、信教の自由を抑制したり否定したりできません。日本は今すぐにでもこれを正すべきです。

Following the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the government filed a petition with the Tokyo District Court for an order to disband the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (formerly the Unification Church), leaving believers on the brink of losing church facilities and clergy, both essential for religious activities such as worship. On July 22nd, at the general meeting of the Japan Committee of the International Coalition for Religious Freedom (ICRF), which defends religious freedom and democracy (chairman: Ito Shoichi, Professor Emeritus at Kyushu University), Marco Respinti, director of the Italian online religion magazine Bitter Winter, which has been monitoring religious persecution mainly in China, gave a speech sounding an alarm about the situation in Japan.

Religious persecution and religious intolerance threaten believers around the world and take many forms, but with the same goal: to suppress or even deny religious freedom.

But religious freedom is not an accident that humans and societies can do without: it is a pillar of any viable community, consolidating a genuine democracy and ensuring all rights and protections for its citizens.

Religious freedom is in fact the first political human right: the right to believe or not believe in God, and to live accordingly, as a result of belief or not, in supernatural beings and forces that encompass and govern the universe. Beyond confining their faith to the confines of their homes, believers should have the freedom to worship publicly and to conduct their personal and communal lives accordingly.

No power, state, church or organization can suppress or deny that right.

Religious freedom is not about relativism or pickiness. It is a fundamental right of every human being, the right to believe that ultimate truth exists and to live in accordance with it.

Take the case of Japan. I come from Europe and admire Japan's vibrant culture and vibrant democracy. Its capital, Tokyo, is a beautiful mix of ancient and modern, home to millions of law-abiding citizens and one of the hardest-working human centers in the world.

But Japan is also a place where great abuses are taking place. I am referring to the World Peace Unification Family and its dissolution request that the Japanese government is seeking from the Tokyo District Court.

Bitter Winter has followed this case closely and has condemned it quite strongly, calling it an absurdity.

It all started with the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on July 8, 2022.

In fact, the Unification Church was held responsible and even faced requests for dissolution as a religious organization.

The defendant, Tetsuya Yamagami, said that his motive for the murder was to punish former Prime Minister Abe for cooperating with the Family Federation, out of hatred for him. He also said that his mother went bankrupt in 2002 because she made excessive donations to the Family Federation.

But much remains clouded by the case, including why he waited 20 years after his mother's bankruptcy before taking action.

But at the end of the day, we have an organization before us being punished for a crime it did not commit.

Former Prime Minister Abe paid a high price, and the Unification Church continues to pay a high price, but the villain is the assassin. No one other than him should be held responsible for his heinous crimes.

However, old campaigns have resurfaced, driven by lawyers and others hostile to the Family Federation, mainly for political reasons, resenting the Family Federation for its decades of successful anti-Communist leadership, and now even targeting groups that had little to do with the Abe assassination, such as the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Any decent democratic person would be alarmed by measures reminiscent of those being taken in the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation. Of course, the Japanese authorities would not want to associate with such rogue nations. Therefore, they should correct the injustices against the Unification Church and other religious minorities. This great country does not deserve such injustice.

No authority, state, church or organization can suppress or deny religious freedom, and Japan must get this right immediately.
